Did knowledge diffusion from Paris determine the onset of the fertility transition?
Objective: testing the diffusion theory of the fertility transition in France, 1780-1800 (Henry Data) Being the political, cultural and urban centre of France, it is assumed that the knowledge of family planning first appeared during the French Revolution. We will test if a diffusion model of the fertility transition is best suited of explaining variation of levels of fertility, or if
Covariates/independent variables:
- Proximity to France’s information hub, operationalzed as distance between Paris and each individual village in the Henry set.
- Occupation of the couple
- Time periods (before vs. after 1790)
Dependent variable: the hazard of giving next birth
